Sci Fi In Print - Book
Although I prefer to read horror novels and stories, I also enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy.
For now, I've listed my favorite sci fi and fantasy authors below, with links to good pages about them. Eventually I hope to get around to listing my least favorite authors, but that won't be for a while yet.
Frank Herbert Dune is probably one of my favorite
Science Fiction novels. Most of the series is good, in fact. I really disliked
the movie of it, though!
Isaac Asimov A wonderful writer, with the _Foundation_
series, the Robot Series, and everything in between.
James Blish Blish did the novelizations for the
Star Trek books, and he's also written several others, most notably _A Case of
Conscience_.
J. R. R. Tolkein _The Hobbit_ is my favorite story
by Tolkien. _The Simarillion_ is the one I never could finish.
Vladimir Savchenko Savchenko wrote a wonderful book
called _Self Discovery_, about a man who clones himself several times. There
are some wonderful blurbs at the beginning of each chapter (kind of like _Dune_)
with sayings such as "Two plus two equals thirty-two is relatively closer to the
truth than two plus two equals forty-one ... "
Sci Fi and Fantasy in Film
As a general rule, I enjoy Sci Fi movies, although I often find that some of the cheesier ones are better. Below are some of my favorite sci fi and fantasy movies.
A Clockwork Orange This is a truly fantastic
movie! I've seen it way too many times, I think, the first when I was 15.
One of my high school English teachers told me this used to be X-rated,
(NC-17 probably if they'd had it then), but its only R now. Malcolm McDowell
is great in this adaptation of Anthony Burgess' novel about reform. After
seeing this movie, you'll never hear "Singing in the Rain" quite the same
way again!
Total Recall One of the few movies I saw twice
in the theater. And when you consider that I see maybe one per year at the
theater, that's pretty amazing! This is a great Schwarzenegger flick!
The Terminator Another fun Arnold flick, which
I enjoyed more the second time around.
Terminator 2 - Judgement Day This was such a
cool movie! The special effects were wonderful, and Robert Patrick was great
as the liquid metal terminator. A must see!
Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan IMHO, the BEST
of the seven Star Trek movies to date. I doubt any of the Next Generation
flicks can top this one. After Star Trek: The Motion Picture (which most
people liked for the fact that the Star Trek crew were reunited, and hated for
the fact that it really sucked!), this one gave
the series a boost! Incredibly sad ending, though!
Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home My second favorite
Star Trek movie. This one's pretty funny, and the story is decent as well.
Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country This movie
grew on me the more I watched it. Still a decent plot.
The Star Wars Trilogy Second only to Star Trek.
These three movies are best viewed on laserdisc in a good home theater system
for the ultimate in space movie experiences!
Alien Nation This is kind of an off-beat sci-fi
movie, with a watchable plot and humorous aliens.
They Live This had a plot that made you think.
Also, probably one of the nastiest fist fights between two men I think I've
ever seen!
Godzilla vs. Hedorah Also known as the Smog Monster,
Hedorah rose from the pollution that the Japanese created. A Godzilla flick
not much seen over here.
Godzilla vs. Monster Zero Yep, it's cheesy, but I
have to admit that Ghidorah is my all-time favorite monster! This is probably
the Godzilla flick I've seen the most.
King Ghidorah Yet another cheesy flick that's
great! Ghidorah's not in it as much as he should be, though!
Mothra I'm not that crazy about this film, but
I will say that the theme song sung by the two miniature girls has to be one
of the most obnoxious! It'll play itself in your head over and over and over
....
Godzilla vs. Gigan Another cheesy one, with lots
of Monster action!
Godzilla vs. Megalon Yet another cheese fest!
Gamera vs. Gaos Well, let's talk cheese! This
one has a _really_ fake giant turtle with tusks taking on _really_ dumb
villains! Worth a look for a chuckle, though!
Sci Fi on TV
The Sci Fi Channel Wow! I love this channel! Not
only does it rerun classic series like Space:1999, The $6,000,000 Man, and
Fridat the 13th, the Series, but also great movies, both new and old. If you
don't have it, you need it!
Star Trek The Classic series! I've been hooked on
these since I was three. This was a great show, and the cast really seemed to
get along. For the most part, they seemed like a family. Great stories, great
characters, hilarious moments. That's what made Star Trek great!
Star Trek: The Next Generation I was never a big
fan of this show. I remember when it first came out, and everybody said, "Rip
Off!" It never really got better over the seasons. Most of the characters
still seemed stiff and uncaring towards each other even in the last season.
I kept hoping for Worf to pull out his phaser and disintegrate that little s*it
Wesley, who is probably the least liked character in all of Star Trek!
There were a few good episodes here and there, but overall, it didn't do it for
me.
Deep Space Nine This one grew on me, and I found
that I liked it quite a bit! Basically a soap opera in space, this one has
more than its fair share of good episodes and decent characters. Let's hear it
for Quark!
Star Trek : Voyager Ugh! Can anyone believe they
renewed this? If anyone knows just exactly WHAT Tulok is supposed to be, please
write and let me know. He's obviously not Vulcan, nor could he have been born
and raised there! Sex change, perhaps? That _might_ account for his name. I
also think the stories here are awful! Lungs? Brains! Plot ripoffs are getting
old.
The Twilight Zone I love these classic episodes.
Some of these are pretty creepy! Currently these are airing on the Sci Fi
Channel. They haven't started airing the color ones yet, and I'm not sure if
they will.
The Outer Limits These were pretty good, too. The
hour format worked well for a lot of these. Lots of chillers!
The X Files I don't know if you classify this as
Sci Fi or Horror. Some of these episodes are nasty! I think my favorite is
the first Eugene Tooms story. Really creepy! Probably the best show currently
on television.
Sliders I really enjoy this Fox show as well. The
plots are usually pretty interesting, and I've really grown to like the
characters. I hope they renew it for another year!
